My absolute Top 5 features and how to use them.

The latest wave update brings what I believe is the most significant set of improvements for organisations managing projects in Business Central

Here are my “favourites” and how a business should use them to improve operations:

1️⃣  Rebranding Jobs to Projects
𝐖𝐑𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: it might not look like much, but I think there will be massive impact in terms of adoption. Also, my go to explanation when talking about jobs with a new customer was: β€œa Job is a Project”.
Tip: search is working (for now) on both jobs and projects keywords.

2️⃣ Multiple customers on a project
𝐖𝐑𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: it is often the case that a project is split between multiple customers, with the new feature it is now possible to track budgets, consumptions and invoicing per each customer. It means less admin, as previously the option was to create multiple projects (jobs), one for each customer and try to connect them.

3️⃣ Project archiving (versioning)
𝐖𝐑𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: it allows versioning, so it is now possible to save (archive) a copy of the project and continue to edit the active project version. Archiving is β€œon-demand”, so it facilitates having multiple variants of the project, comparing versions, and restoring an archived version. Having an archived project baseline is critical for project managers.

4️⃣ Invoicing multiple projects simultaneously
𝐖𝐑𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: multiple jobs can be pulled into one single invoice, similarly with invoicing multiple shipments. It simplify admin work both for the business and for the customer, and gives more visibility into what’s invoiced and what not.

5️⃣ Assemble to Order and Explode BOM (I just couldn’t decide)
𝐖𝐑𝐲 𝐒𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: these features come to further increase the usability of the Projects module for businesses having lite manufacturing activities. If routings are not required, a business is (in most cases) better off using Projects, rather than Manufacturing – both in terms of licensing and process simplicity.
